Features and enhancements in version 2.3

(Check also the updated screenshots page.)

Administrative features:

Use a Wizard to configure and diagnose application settings:

  • Configure the application settings with an easy-to-use interface instead of configuration file.
  • Wizard will report and diagnose problems such as incorrect file permissions or missing email components.
Set an optional limit to the space occupied by each user:
  • Total space occupied by each user includes both messages and attachments.
  • Option to specify the exact amount in mega bytes or to leave the space unlimited.
  • The Account Settings window shows the individual space occupied by the user's email on a given moment.
  • The admin page shows the disk usage of all users, user by user.
End-user features

Add signatures to your messages:

  • Create your optional signature and store it in the WebmailASP database.
  • Decide if you want to include it with all outgoing messages or just with new ones.
Decide when to delete the messages in the POP server. Four optional settings:
  • When WebmailASP downloads them.
  • After they are moved to the Deleted folder.
  • After they are deleted from the Deleted folder.
  • Don't delete: WebmailASP makes a copy of the messages in the POP server but doesn't delete them from there. This is useful if the user uses other email clients (Outlook, etc. with the same account.)
Automatically delete some of the messages in the WebmailASP database when you log out. Four optional settings:
  • All messages in the Deleted folder.
  • Messages in the Deleted folder, older than an x number of days.
  • All messages in all folders. This option together with "delete in POP = never" is convinient for those who want to use WebmailASP just as a "viewer" of the POP account, not really as an email database.
  • No automatic deleting; all deleting is manual.
New Print possibilities:
  • Print button in message window opens print dialog.
  • Print button in Contact Books toolbar creates a new page with information for all the contacts. Print this page to put your WebmailASP Contact Books on paper.
Improved reliability in communication with POP server.

Improved reliability in showing message contents.

Features and enhancements in version 2.2

WebmailASP now supports the SMTP and POP component "JMail Professional" from Dimac.net:
  • WebmailASP was enhanced internally to include JMail-only features such as SMTP Authentication.
  • ServerObjects.com's ASPMail and ASPPOP3 are still supported; specifying the correct type is a simple configuration setting.
  • For the end-user the WebmailASP interface is the same regardless of the brand of email component underneath.
  • More options in terms of components means that the server adminstrator can pick the best licensing deal, and the web-hosting user has more flexibility in picking the hosting company.
Other usability improvements in version 2.2:
  • Support for time-zones through GMT offset.
  • Improved report window for SMTP communication.
  • Improved rendering of plain-text messages.
  • Improved handling of "new-message" status.

Features and enhancements in 2.1

Transparent upsizing to SQL Server:
  • Moving from MS Access to SQL Server is now just a matter of exporting the tables. Each SQL query and some parts of the code were inspected and corrected where needed to guarantee compatibility with both databases.
New Account Settings dialog:
  • Change information about yourself and about your account.
  • Decide if messages are copied or moved from the POP server.
  • Check how much space you are using with messages, attachments, and contacts.
  • It is now possible to have a SMTP server name different than the POP server name.
  • Changed toolbar to accommodate the new pull-down menu "Account". This menu contains the options "Refresh Inbox", "Account" (opens the new dialog), and "Logout".
Admin page with more options and security:
  • Added "storage space occupied" to the adminUsers.asp page in order to help the administrator see how much total space each user is occupying with messages, attachments, contacts, etc.
  • Added a link to the Account Settings dialog to bring up the adminUsers page. This link is only visible if the current user is an administrator (field isAdmin=true in database.)
  • The adminUsers.asp page itself also checks if a user is logged in, and if the user is administrator, otherwise it will not display the users list.
Other usability enhancements:
  • To select or unselect a message, the user can now simply click anywhere in the folder-listing frame. Clicking on the subject still unselects all other messages.
  • URLs received in plain-text messages are now transformed into hyperlinks, which open ther target page in a new window.
  • Likewise, WebmailASP also checks the contents of HTML messages and makes sure that all hyperlinks open also in a new page.
  • More tests in diagnostics.asp and more tests in showCompose.asp.

Features and enhancements in 2.0:

New full-featured Contact Book manager:
  • Window with contact books pops-up from main window and has its own toolbar, books frame, and contact frame.
  • Users have their own one or many contact books; each book lists many contacts; each contact is defined by a name, street addres, etc. and a list of email addresses.
  • Book functions include: create, rename, delete, and import.
  • A book of contacts can be imported from another application through a .CSV file.
  • Contact functions include: create, update, move to another book, delete
  • Search function finds contacts in any of the user's books that match the criteria in text fields such as First Name, Last Name, Street Address, etc.
  • Last but not least, the obviously important function of pressing one button to send a copy of a contact's addresses to the To, Cc, or Bcc fields of the Compose window.
New folder-sorting options:
  • Pick a column heading to have folder listing sorted according to the contents of that column.
  • Pick the header again to invert the order of the sorting.
  • Sorting is indicated by an arrow next to column heading in the main window of Webmail ASP.
New message search function:
  • Looks up and matches messages in both standard folders (Inbox, Sent, etc.) and user-created ones.
  • Available options: "all words", "any of the words", "exact phrase".
  • Search results are presented the same way a folder of messages is. This gives the user the possibility of doing message-related operations right there and then: opening, replying, sorting, deleting, etc.
New Print Message/View Message window offers an alternative way of displaying messages:
  • The user selects one or more messages and presses the Message Pop-up button in the main window's toolbar. A window shows up separately for each selected message. The user can leave this window open while he or she performs other tasks in the main window such as opening different folders or even reading other messages.
  • The View Message window contains both the headers (From, Subjet, etc.) and the text of the message.
  • Perfect for printing: just click the window with the right mouse button and select Print.
Improved Refresh Inbox interface:
  • Upon login, Inbox is refreshed automatically in the background.
  • When Inbox is refreshing in the background, the refresh button shows an animation.
  • Inbox is refreshed automatically every X minutes.
  • When new mail is moved in the background to the Inbox, the title of the window changes. This alerts the user for new mail even if the window is minimized.
  • If the user presses the refresh button, the regular Refresh Inbox window still comes up and reports details about communication with the POP server.

Features and enhancements in 1.1:

  • New dialog window shows diagnostics and the log of the communication with the POP account.
  • Long downloads are now split into multiple requests and the Inbox is updated with each request. It is now possible to download hundreds of messages from a slow POP server server without the risk of a time-out interruption. (Number of received messages is limited in the online demo for storage-space reasons.)
  • Purchase of upload component is not needed. A new ASP class was written that handles the uploading of attachments sent with a new message. This makes WebmailASP an even better value.
  • Layout improvements to both the login page and the main frameset. The new design is more clean and modern.
  • Improvements in speed of access for database folders with a large number of messages.
  • Improvements in functionality of the folder tree: current folder is highlighted in the tree; changes to the structure of the tree (deleting, adding, or moving a folder) do not collapse the tree anymore.
  • New, simple user management page with some user statistics and the capability of deleting all the user's database records and external files with one click.
